Sugilite was named after the Japanese geologist who discovered it. Colors of sugilite vary from a pale grayish lavender to red-violet to a deep dark purple often with black matrix and reddish brown or yellowish blotches. Bright purple with little matrixing or blotching is preferred. A small percentage of material is translucent, most pieces seen on the market are opaque and are composed of sugilite and chalcedony. Sugilite with chalcedony often has more reddish purple color and or unique patterning creating stunning stones.
